Costello described this as a work of “comedic philosophy”。
Chris Fletcher,
This is a strange little audio book from Elvis Costello, full of humorous anecdotes, odd ramblings, some very basic instruction for beginning guitarists (essentially, start by learning songs in the keys of G, D, and A, so your fretting hand can start to feel at home on the instrument before you submit it to the inquisitional torture that is F major)。 I've been a quasi-fan of Elvis Costello since he co-wrote a bunch of great songs with my favorite Beatle, Paul, back in the 1980s。 Although I don't This is a strange little audio book from Elvis Costello, full of humorous anecdotes, odd ramblings, some very basic instruction for beginning guitarists (essentially, start by learning songs in the keys of G, D, and A, so your fretting hand can start to feel at home on the instrument before you submit it to the inquisitional torture that is F major)。 I've been a quasi-fan of Elvis Costello since he co-wrote a bunch of great songs with my favorite Beatle, Paul, back in the 1980s。 Although I don't think this is really going to help many people actually learn to play the guitar, it's just quirky and endearing enough a listen that it make make someone want to learn。 And maybe that's the point。 。。。more
MG,
His wit and personality come through but not much of his story or the substance of his thought。 Too bad, since I consider him one of the more interesting musicians out there。
Bill,
A fairly pleasant (slightly over) hour and a half but ultimately pretty “meh”。 Probably helps if you’re a guitarist, which I am not。
Isabela,
Not a real guitar lesson per se, but basically how to have the right attitude in music and life, but particularly rock music。 Very amusing 😄。
Bon Tom,
Interesting little production that just might teach you your first chords, and in audio form, no less。 It's also quite amusing and enjoyable to listen to, with good humor interspersed。 Interesting little production that just might teach you your first chords, and in audio form, no less。 It's also quite amusing and enjoyable to listen to, with good humor interspersed。 。。。more
Roy Lotz,
It is hard to say what this is exactly。 Costello describes it as a piece of “comedic philosophy,” though it is only slightly funny and not very philosophical。 It is also most certainly not an instructional book。 Costello’s only advice is to begin with the G chord rather than the C, because the other important chords in the key of G (C, D, E minor) are easier than those in C。 Good advice, as far as it goes… though not exactly worth the price。 Apart from that, what do we have? A kind of rambling, occasionally charming audiobook filled with music and sounds effects, which says almost nothing and takes very little time to say it。 At the very least, if this inspires a few people to try their hand at the guitar, then it will have done a real service for world peace。 。。。more
Laurel Wright,
Interesting piece。 Probably more informative for those who play guitar but still draws together a lot of information relative to previous pieces over the last several decades。
Rosette,
For guitar enthusiasts!!! What a lesson from Costelo❤️
Cathy,
I didn’t actually finish the audiobook。 It just didn’t interest me。
Brian Joynt,
I like EC, but didn’t care for the jokey tone here。 It was a little bit too much of whatever it was he was doing。
Jay Clement,
92-2021。 This is an audio-only book。 My first such adventure with audiobooks。 It was a joy to hear Elvis read his own words。 I laughed out loud often, as he ruefully explained the joys and mistakes of learning to play guitar。 Is it a serious guide to learning guitar? Perhaps not。 But to this veteran player, it was fun to nod in recognition of all those steps along the way to learning to play。
Simon,
There were some good parts, but it was a little too much for me。
Bruce Burger,
This is excellent and the audio version is my favorite。 He's so witty, funny, and articulate。 Very entertaining! This is excellent and the audio version is my favorite。 He's so witty, funny, and articulate。 Very entertaining! 。。。more
Denise,
I love his voice— just not the story。
Amy Morris,
Love Elvis, but this was just okay。
J。A。,
Does not go into technical detail but serves as a great starting point in skill and motivation。
HobbitFromPA,
It's amazing I finished this and picked up a guitar and I'm now shredding like you would not believe。 It's amazing I finished this and picked up a guitar and I'm now shredding like you would not believe。 。。。more
